WHY THE RIFT

There is only one place on our planet where multiple great wildlife phenomenon’s concentrate, volcanos dominate the landscape, multiple cultures exist, mountains and lakes forge substantial habitats and our hominid origins are all harboured: all of these are found in the great Rift Valley of Africa.

IMPORTANCE

In the 1930’s, photo artists shone a light on the beauty of Americas magnificent wildernesses – not seen by many people before and highlighting their importance to society. The significance of these images was not lost on the American government and in 1940, due to Ansel Adams’ imagery and John Muirs’ support, Kings canyon was proclaimed as a national park. This is one instance in the USA where the use of imagery and expert input helped create the protection of land into National Parks, forever shaping the collective conscious of Americans regarding their natural heritage.

The Rift Valley not only harbours substantial natural beauty. It provides refuge for the greatest wildlife mammal migrations on earth. Remote cultures still take sanctuary in the Rift ecosystem in addition to large populations of people in cities. No where else in the world do such beautiful contrasts exist. Finally, the Rift is the largest repository of our human origins- with some of the most noteworthy links to our ancestors found within it.

To document these is vitally important for us to reflect on how much this special place fosters. Equally, we are telling the story of the challenges within the Rift. Food scarcity, environmental concerns and other anthropogenic factors which affect people on an every-day basis. The essays in the book chronicle important, relatable aspects of the Rift, while the stunning images bring the these stories to life – resulting in a delivery that celebrates the Rift in a stunning portrayal.

This project highlights this vitally important scar of Africa, converting it from a mere geological entity to showcasing it as the most significant part of Africa’s identity. The book highlights how much there is to conserve and protect – all aspects that form part of our own collective consciousness. The Rift has provided for many millions of years. It is up to us to make sure it is treasured.
